Medicine, Art and Society in Georgian Dublin

This year’s Heritage Day celebrates the 100th anniversary of the donation of the Quin Tassie Collection to RCPI by a descendant of Past President Dr Henry Quin (1718–1791). 

Conserved last year with support from the Heritage Council, this unique collection sits at the intersection of medicine, science, and art and provides a fascinating insight into Georgian Dublin.

The collection consists of 26 drawers of miniature gem casts and moulds created by the Scottish engraver James Tassie (1735-1799) and Quin, his mentor.

Join our expert speakers as they explore the world of medicine in eighteenth-century Dublin, from the contribution of physicians to civic and cultural life, to the relationship between Dr Henry Quin and the renowned Scottish sculptor James Tassie. We will share new investigations exploring Quin and Tassie's collaboration to reproduce gems and create imitations, and examine Dr John Gilborne’s The Medical Review, offering a unique perspective on the medical and social landscape of the period.

Following the morning lectures, our speakers will come together for a panel discussion reflecting on the enduring connections between medicine, art, and society. 

After coffee, enjoy a special musical performance by the Irish Baroque Orchestra Young Artists, bringing the sounds of the Georgian era to life against the unique cultural backdrop of the day's exploration.
