Overview

The Medicines Manufacturing Data Institute (MMDI) Phase 1 competition opens on 7 September 2026 and closes on 14 October.

An in-person networking event will be held in London on 9 September 2026, providing organisations interested in applying an opportunity to learn more about the concept of the MMDI, competition scope and objectives while connecting with potential collaborators from across the medicines manufacturing ecosystem.

At this event, you will:

  • hear about the competition scope, objectives, eligibility requirements, and assessment criteria
  • learn more about the vision and ambition for the MMDI
  • hear insights and lessons learned from similar programmes and initiatives
  • network with organisations from across the medicines manufacturing value chain and identify potential consortium partners
  • gain an understanding of the opportunities available through both the Phase 1 competition and the future Phase 2 investment opportunity

An online briefing event will follow on 11 September detailing the competition scope, objectives, eligibility requirements, assessment criteria and application process.

Organisations considering an application are strongly encouraged to attend one or both events to understand the opportunity, begin consortium discussions and meet potential partners.

Competition overview

The Medicines Manufacturing Data Institute (MMDI) aims to be a trusted, secure and federated national data hub, enabling organisations across the medicines development and manufacturing ecosystem to securely capture, share and use data.

This competition forms the first phase of a two-phase competition. Collectively, this programme will bring together a leading consortium to establish a Medicines Manufacturing Data Institute, enabling greater data sharing and collaboration across the medicines manufacturing sector.

Phase 1: Aims to provide seed funding to establish a consortium and develop a compelling case for support for a future Phase 2 award to establish the MMDI.

Phase 2: Aims to support a large-scale collaborative research and development (CR&D) project of up to £5 million to establish the MMDI. Only successful applicants at Phase 1 can apply.

Who should attend?

The in-person networking event will provide an opportunity to learn more about the competition, explore potential collaborations, and connect with organisations that may play a role in establishing and shaping the future MMDI.

This event is aimed at organisations interested in leading or collaborating on an MMDI phase 1 application, as well as those looking to contribute to the future development of the MMDI either through technical or operational capabilities or through experience in similar programmes.

We particularly encourage attendance from:

  • organisations intending to lead or join a consortium application
  • organisations with experience of developing, managing or hosting large-scale data infrastructures, platforms or data-sharing initiatives
  • data infrastructure providers and technology organisations
  • Catapults and innovation centres
  • universities, research organisations and academic institutions
  • SMEs and larger businesses operating across the medicines manufacturing ecosystem
  • organisations seeking to become end users of the infrastructure, including:  data depositors who generate and contribute data, and data users who will access and apply data to support research, development and manufacturing activities
  • commercialisation, adoption and exploitation specialists interested in supporting the future growth and sustainability of MMDI
