|Speaker:
- Karen Scrivener-Fearn & Gillian Buckingham - Director & Speech and Language Therapists
This webinar will be APIL Accredited and will carry 1 CPD hour.
Learning Objectives:
• Explain dysphagia and recognise how swallowing difficulties following brain injury can affect a person’s physical health, psychological wellbeing, relationships, social participation and quality of life.
• Identify the wider factors that can influence swallowing, including cognition, communication, respiratory health, fatigue, mobility, reflux and an individual’s broader medical history.
• Critically consider the language and practice surrounding eating and drinking with acknowledged risks, including individual choice, shared decision-making and ongoing professional responsibility.
• Explore the multifactorial nature of complications such as aspiration pneumonia and consider how potentially modifiable risk factors can be identified and addressed.
• Compare compensatory approaches, including diet and fluid modification, with rehabilitative interventions that address swallowing strength, skill and the wider sensory-motor pathway.
