Faculty of Occupational Medicine & Faculty of Public Health Medicine Joint Conference

Fifty years ago in 1976, a pioneering group of industrial medical doctors came together to advance the specialty of occupational medicine in Ireland.

That same year, a group of public health physicians came together to raise awareness of health threats and help protect the Irish population.

Both celebrating their 50^th anniversary this year, RCPI Faculty of Occupational Medicine and RCPI Faculty of Public Health Medicine present this joint conference, aligning their perspectives. Equality of access to healthcare remains key to advancing population health. Both faculties will present a contemporary picture of how health inequity persists in working and other underserved populations. 

Attendees will hear from speakers from further afield involved in efforts to extend access to occupational health services to wider publics, including Prof Jorma Rantanen (former director general of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health) and Dr Nick Pahl (CEO, Society of Occupational Medicine UK).

RCPI Faculty of Occupational Medicine and RCPI Faculty of Public Health Medicine’s conference is part of both faculties’ 50^th anniversary year of celebrations, and is a key event in the current college year. 

Learning Outcomes

• Physicians more informed to position themselves as advocates for better population health including the health of the working population
• Better understanding of the multi-layered and inter-connected issues presented by inequality of access that challenges and negatively impacts on national population health, wellbeing and economic productivity
• Building and advancing a national agenda for equity of access in healthcare
